The Dialectics of Islam and Nationalism: Reconciling Religious and National Identities in the Public Sphere

Abstract

This study examines the dialectical relationship between Islam and nationalism as an effort to reconcile religious and national identities within the public sphere. The study aims to analyze the conceptualization of Islam and nationalism, identify the patterns of interaction between religious and national identities, and formulate a reconciliation model that is relevant to Indonesia's pluralistic society. This research employed a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected from scientific books and reputable national and international journal articles published between 2022 and 2025, then analyzed using thematic analysis through data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three main points. First, contemporary literature conceptualizes Islam and nationalism as complementary rather than contradictory identities. Second, the dialectics of religious and national identities in the public sphere are manifested in three patterns: conflictual, accommodative, and integrative, with the integrative pattern being the most dominant in the Indonesian context. Third, this study proposes the Integrative Islam–Nationalism Reconciliation Model, which emphasizes religious moderation, national awareness, public dialogue, and the orientation toward the common good as the principal pillars of national integration. The study contributes theoretically by integrating theories of nationalism, the public sphere, and moderate Islamic thought into a comprehensive analytical framework. Future studies are recommended to empirically examine the proposed model across diverse social and digital public sphere settings using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method approaches.
