Abstract

Understanding students' mathematical concepts is an ability to re-express abstract ideas to classify or group objects or events that are examples and not examples of these ideas. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects in this study were seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Leihitu. From 23 students, 2 students were taken as prospective research subjects, then given a set of material test questions. After the test students were interviewed. Based on the results of research and discussion, it can be concluded that students' understanding of mathematical concepts in solving set problems represented by two students in class VII of SMP Negeri 5 Leihitu is as follows. Students' understanding of mathematical concepts has fulfilled 5 indicators of understanding mathematical concepts. The indicator of understanding students' mathematical concepts used by researchers in this study is to apply concepts and procedures that have been obtained in new situations. applying mathematical concepts that students do can identify the problem being worked on, by stating the information on the problem to solve the problem. students' understanding to determine plans by making a set of known problems based on the formulas listed in the questions. students' understanding in solving problems by eliminating and substituting from the set material problems using problem solving techniques that are formulated mathematically using the notion of sets.
