The Effect of Case-Based Learning (CBL) Model on Critical Thinking Skills of Students of SMPN 14 Padang

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are an essential competency for students to face the demands of 21st-century learning. However, science instruction in schools tends to be teacher-centered, thus under-developing students' critical thinking skills. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Case-Based Learning (CBL) model on the critical thinking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 14 Padang on the human excretory system. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample size was 62 students: class VIII.3 as the experimental class and class VIII.2 as the control class, selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of a critical thinking skills essay test, an observation sheet on learning implementation, and a student response questionnaire. Based on the results of the observation sheet on the implementation of the CBL model, the percentage of students' responses to the CBL model was 97%, categorized as very good. Furthermore, the results of the student response questionnaire to the CBL model were 85%, categorized as very good. The results of the hypothesis test using the t-test obtained a tcount > ttable value of 2.316 > 2.000 with a sample size of 31 students per class with α = 0.05. The results of the hypothesis are H0 rejected and Ha accepted, meaning there is an effect of the CBL model on the critical thinking skills of junior high school students in the respiratory and excretory system material.
