This study aims to analyze the representation of poverty in Indonesian poetry anthologies, particularly in the works of W.S. Rendra, Taufiq Ismail, and Chairil Anwar, and to examine the differences in the portrayal of poverty based on socio-historical backgrounds, the social factors underlying the poems, and the relationship between poetry and the social structure of their respective eras. The research employs a qualitative text analysis method, focusing on the interpretation of poetic content and the social contexts that shaped the works. The findings reveal that poverty is represented through physical, social, and psychological suffering. W.S. Rendra emphasizes social criticism of class inequality, Taufiq Ismail highlights urban poverty and the lives of street children, while Chairil Anwar portrays the suffering of ordinary people in the context of conflict and the pressures of life. These differences in representation are influenced by the distinct social and historical backgrounds of each poet. Furthermore, social factors such as economic inequality, urbanization, and historical conflicts serve as important contexts for the emergence of poverty as a theme. Poetry functions as a medium of social criticism and a reflection of social reality, while also giving voice to the experiences of marginalized communities. This study suggests that literary analysis should pay closer attention to socio-economic contexts so that poetry is understood not only from an aesthetic perspective but also as a reflection of the social life of society.
