Abstract

This study aims to describe the alienation of Chinese-Indonesian identity resulting from social inequality in Gracia Tioso’s novel Perkumpulan Anak Luar Nikah, from the perspective of Frantz Fanon’s postcolonialism. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, using the novel Perkumpulan Anak Luar Nikah (2023) as the primary data source. The data consisted of quotations, dialogues, narratives, and character actions that represented discrimination, marginalization, and identity crises experienced by the Chinese Indonesian community within Indonesian society. Data were collected through reading and note-taking, and analysis was conducted by identifying, classifying, describing, and interpreting them based on Fanon’s postcolonial concepts. The findings reveal that the alienation of Chinese-Indonesians is represented through four major aspects: ethnic identity alienation, cultural hybridity, social discrimination as a colonial legacy, and efforts toward decolonizing consciousness. The characters in the novel experience identity crises due to their position as a minority group constantly perceived as “the other” within Indonesian social life. Furthermore, social discrimination inherited from colonialism generates psychological trauma, social marginalization, and inequality in gaining national recognition. Through a postcolonial lens, the novel demonstrates that colonial legacies continue to influence contemporary Indonesian social relations, particularly the Chinese-Indonesian ethnic community.
