Generative AI Policy

These policies are established in response to the growing use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in research and scholarly publishing. The policies are periodically reviewed and updated to reflect evolving ethical standards and best practices in academic publishing.

The purpose of these policies is to promote transparency, academic integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence technologies by authors, reviewers, and editors.

LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra will continue to monitor developments in generative AI and AI-assisted technologies and may revise these policies as necessary to maintain compliance with accepted standards of scholarly publishing and publication ethics.

For Authors — Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Tools

LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra recognizes the potential benefits of generative AI and AI-assisted tools when used responsibly to support manuscript preparation, such as for language improvement, literature synthesis, and content organization.

However, generative AI and AI-assisted technologies must not replace human critical thinking, scholarly expertise, intellectual contribution, interpretation, or academic judgment.

Full human oversight and responsibility are required at all stages of research, manuscript preparation, submission, revision, and publication.

Author Responsibility

Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for all content contained in their manuscripts, including content produced or assisted by Artificial Intelligence technologies.

Authors are responsible for:

  • Verifying the accuracy, validity, integrity, and objectivity of all AI-generated or AI-assisted content.
  • Ensuring that the manuscript reflects the authors' own original intellectual and scholarly contribution.
  • Verifying references, citations, quotations, data, interpretations, and factual claims generated or suggested by AI tools.
  • Ensuring that AI-generated information does not contain fabricated, inaccurate, misleading, biased, or unverifiable information.
  • Maintaining confidentiality, data privacy, intellectual property rights, copyright, and applicable ethical standards.
  • Ensuring that the use of AI does not constitute plagiarism, data fabrication, falsification, inappropriate authorship, or other forms of academic misconduct.
  • Clearly disclosing the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools in an AI Declaration Statement when submitting the manuscript.

The use of basic technological tools solely for spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting, or conventional language correction does not normally require disclosure.

However, when generative AI or AI-assisted technologies are used as part of the research process, data analysis, methodological procedure, interpretation, translation beyond basic language correction, content generation, literature synthesis, or other substantive scholarly activities, their use must be clearly described in the manuscript.

When AI forms part of the research methodology, authors must provide sufficient information in the Methods section regarding:

  • the name of the AI tool or system;
  • the version of the tool, where applicable;
  • the purpose for which the AI was used;
  • how the tool was used;
  • the nature of the input or prompts where relevant;
  • the procedures undertaken to verify the output; and
  • the extent of human oversight and validation.

Responsible Use

Authors must ensure that any generative AI or AI-assisted tool used during research or manuscript preparation:

  • protects the confidentiality of unpublished manuscripts and research data;
  • protects personal, sensitive, confidential, or proprietary information;
  • does not obtain inappropriate ownership or reuse rights over authors' materials;
  • does not restrict the future publication or dissemination of the manuscript;
  • does not compromise intellectual property rights;
  • does not generate or introduce fabricated references, data, quotations, or findings; and
  • is used in accordance with applicable ethical and legal requirements.

Authors remain responsible for identifying and correcting factual errors, hallucinations, inappropriate references, misleading statements, and potential biases contained in AI-generated outputs.

The final responsibility for the manuscript rests entirely with the human authors.

Authorship

Generative AI systems, AI-assisted technologies, chatbots, Large Language Models (LLMs), or similar tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra.

Authorship is limited to human contributors who meet accepted scholarly authorship criteria and who are capable of taking responsibility and accountability for the integrity, accuracy, originality, and ethical conduct of the published work.

AI tools cannot:

  • assume responsibility for published work;
  • approve the final version of a manuscript;
  • respond to questions concerning research integrity;
  • declare conflicts of interest;
  • enter into publishing agreements; or
  • be held accountable for errors or misconduct.

Therefore, AI systems cannot fulfill the responsibilities required for scholarly authorship.

Figures, Images, and Artwork

The use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create, manipulate, alter, or fabricate research images, figures, illustrations, photographs, or graphical representations is not permitted, particularly where such modification could affect the interpretation or integrity of research data.

Limited technical adjustments may be permitted, including adjustments to:

  • brightness;
  • contrast;
  • resolution;
  • image size; or
  • other non-substantive visual properties,

provided that such adjustments do not obscure, eliminate, manipulate, distort, or misrepresent information contained in the original data.

The use of generative AI for image generation may only be permitted when the use of AI is itself an explicit component of the research methodology.

In such cases, authors must describe the use of AI transparently and in sufficient detail to allow methodological evaluation and, where applicable, reproducibility.

The use of generative AI for journal cover artwork or other non-research illustrative purposes may only be permitted with prior editorial approval and appropriate confirmation regarding copyright, licensing, and intellectual property rights.

AI Declaration by Authors

Authors who use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies for substantive purposes must provide a clear disclosure statement when submitting their manuscript.

The declaration should identify:

  • the AI tool used;
  • the purpose of its use;
  • the stage of research or manuscript preparation in which it was used; and
  • confirmation that the authors reviewed, verified, and take full responsibility for the final content.

An example of an acceptable statement is:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies: During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of AI tool] for [specific purpose]. The author(s) subsequently reviewed, verified, and edited the output and take full responsibility for the content of the published article.

If no generative AI or AI-assisted technology was used for substantive purposes, authors may state:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies: The authors declare that no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in the substantive preparation, analysis, or writing of this manuscript.

Failure to disclose substantive use of generative AI may be considered during editorial assessment and may be handled according to the journal's publication ethics and research integrity policies.

For Reviewers — Use of Generative AI in the Peer Review Process

All manuscripts received for peer review by LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra must be treated as strictly confidential documents.

Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts, manuscript excerpts, supplementary materials, unpublished research data, reviewer reports, or any confidential information related to the manuscript into publicly accessible generative AI or AI-assisted systems.

Uploading confidential manuscript materials to external AI systems may violate:

  • confidentiality obligations;
  • intellectual property rights;
  • copyright;
  • authors' privacy;
  • data protection requirements; and
  • publication ethics.

Peer review depends fundamentally on human scholarly judgment, disciplinary expertise, critical evaluation, and academic responsibility.

Therefore, reviewers are not permitted to use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to perform the scientific or scholarly evaluation of submitted manuscripts.

Generative AI must not replace the reviewer's own assessment of:

  • originality and novelty;
  • theoretical contribution;
  • research methodology;
  • quality of data and evidence;
  • analysis and interpretation;
  • discussion of findings;
  • relevance of references;
  • scholarly contribution;
  • research integrity; or
  • suitability for publication.

The reviewer remains fully responsible and accountable for the accuracy, integrity, originality, confidentiality, and quality of the peer-review report.

Reviewers must not submit AI-generated peer-review reports as their own scholarly assessment.

Where authors have disclosed the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies, reviewers may evaluate the transparency, appropriateness, and methodological implications of that disclosure as part of the peer-review process.

If a reviewer suspects inappropriate, undisclosed, misleading, or unethical use of AI in a manuscript, the reviewer should confidentially report the concern to the Editor rather than independently investigating the authors.

LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra may use secure and editorially approved technological or AI-assisted systems for limited administrative purposes, such as:

  • plagiarism or similarity screening;
  • technical manuscript checks;
  • metadata validation;
  • language or formatting checks;
  • reviewer identification or matching; and
  • other administrative editorial functions.

Any such system must be used in a manner consistent with confidentiality, privacy, publication ethics, and applicable data protection standards.

For Editors — Use of Generative AI in the Editorial Process

All manuscripts submitted to LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra, together with reviewer reports, editorial correspondence, supplementary materials, author information, and related unpublished information, must be treated as strictly confidential.

Editors must not upload submitted manuscripts, manuscript excerpts, reviewer reports, editorial decision letters, correspondence, unpublished research data, or other confidential materials into publicly accessible generative AI or AI-assisted systems.

Such practices may violate confidentiality, intellectual property rights, copyright, authors' privacy, and data protection requirements.

Editorial assessment and publication decisions require human scholarly judgment, editorial independence, academic expertise, and responsibility.

Therefore, editors are not permitted to use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies as substitutes for human judgment in the scientific or scholarly evaluation of manuscripts or in making editorial decisions.

AI systems must not independently determine:

  • whether a manuscript should be accepted;
  • whether a manuscript should be rejected;
  • whether major or minor revisions are required;
  • the scientific validity of research;
  • the originality or novelty of research;
  • the interpretation of research findings;
  • the ethical acceptability of research; or
  • the final editorial decision.

Editors remain fully responsible and accountable for:

  • manuscript screening;
  • reviewer selection;
  • management of peer review;
  • interpretation of reviewer recommendations;
  • assessment of ethical issues;
  • editorial decisions;
  • communication with authors; and
  • maintenance of publication integrity.

Editors may refer to AI disclosure statements provided by authors when evaluating manuscripts.

Where inappropriate, undisclosed, misleading, or unethical use of generative AI is suspected, editors must handle the matter according to the journal's publication ethics, research integrity, correction, withdrawal, and retraction policies.

Editors should not enter confidential manuscript material into generative AI systems for the purpose of investigating suspected misconduct.

LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra may employ secure and editor-approved AI-assisted systems for limited administrative purposes, including:

  • plagiarism and similarity checking;
  • initial technical manuscript screening;
  • metadata verification;
  • manuscript-format checking;
  • reviewer identification and matching;
  • detection of potential duplicate submissions; and
  • other editorial administrative processes.

Any AI-assisted system used for these purposes must comply with applicable principles of:

  • confidentiality;
  • data privacy;
  • information security;
  • intellectual property;
  • publication ethics; and
  • human editorial oversight.

The final responsibility for all editorial decisions remains with the Editor and the Editorial Board of LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra.

Policy on Violations

Any suspected violation of this Generative AI Policy will be reviewed by the Editorial Team of LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra.

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, appropriate actions may include:

  • requesting clarification from the author, reviewer, or editor;
  • requesting correction or revision;
  • rejection of the manuscript;
  • withdrawal of the manuscript;
  • correction of a published article;
  • retraction of a published article; or
  • other actions considered appropriate under the journal's publication ethics and research integrity policies.

All cases will be handled based on available evidence, principles of fairness, confidentiality, transparency, and recognized standards of publication ethics.

This policy may be periodically reviewed and updated by the Editorial Board of LINGUE: Jurnal Bahasa, Budaya, dan Sastra in response to developments in generative AI technology, scholarly publishing standards, research integrity requirements, and publication ethics.
